Solve spam problem in Wordpress with Akismet
I still remember how annoying to receive spam comments in my Wordpress. But then i found Akismet plugin to handle this problem. What is Akismet? Akismet is similar like Bad Behaviour and Spam Karma. Why i don’t use the Bad Behaviour or Spam Karma? Hehe..silly answer, i just found about three of them in the same day and then i think the Akismet is the best.
What is Akismet actually?
Akismet is spam comments removal tool. Wordpress is vulnerable to spam comments. It is so frustrating to receive spam comments. I know how it felt, at the early time starting this blog i felt so happy to see a number of comments. But after i suddenly saw the pattern of the comments were weird (like i said HERE) then i just knew that they were all spams.
How does it work?
When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down. All the spams will be saved in the database for 15 days in case you want to check it out manually and then automattically deletes it. Don’t worry if the web service is down, as all your comments will simply go into the moderation queue.
Akismet is a project of Matt Mullenweg of WordPress and his merry band of Automattic rascal hackers. Akismet is also FREE for personal use. If you are a pro-blogger or you want to use it for commercial use, you must have special commercial API key. How to know you are a problogger or not? Here is a quote from Akismet:
We still need to keep the lights on and the servers humming though. If you are making “mad paper” from your blog (more than $500 a month) or if you’re a Big Company we have special commercial API keys available just for you.
Ooops..remember, you must have a Wordpress.com API key to use Akismet. So get invited by someone from Wordpress.com. Don’t have anyone?Don’t have friends?Come on, have a life! Hehe..don’t worry, you may get it via Flock browser site. Here are the steps to get it:
1. Install Flock. (download it HERE)
2. Open your Flock browser and visit http://www.wordpress.com/flock/.
3. Fill in the form and click the “Sign up” button to submit it.
4. Done. You will get your WordPress.com account information in your mailbox. (please keep the API key)
Please be informed that the WordPress.com free account registration page is only accessible using Flock browser (a promtion way to spread Flock?).
And here are the steps to install and use Akismet:
1. Download plugin and unzip.
2. Upload the plugin file to your WordPress plugins directory inside of wp-content.
3. Activate it from the plugins menu inside of WordPress.
4. Enter your API key.
5. Forget that spam was ever a problem.

[…] Some of you might try to get Wordpress.com blog account before via Flock. I know some of us may dislike to have it as it will have “.wordpress.com” extension as part of the blog address but some of people may find it very special, example is a die hard fan of Wordpress. To have the blog account at Wordpress.com, you must be invited from an existing Wordpress.com user, or previously a lot of bloggers apply it via Flock website. Now, you can apply the Wordpress.com account straight from the Wordpress.com website. Got get it now. What will you get after your Wordpress.com account is approved? 9 templates The free account at Wordpress.com will come with 9 free templates which i think its OK to use it. The lack is you cannot alter the code or the presentation of the templates. Just activate your desired theme and use it. No ads can be added, no extra codes can be added either. Its really a pure “just for writing” blog. […]
